We provide Laser Blended Vision (through Eye Laser Specialists) for Melbourne and surrounding communities, offering freedom from inconvenient glasses and contact lenses.
PRESBYOND laser blended vision is an excellent option for older patients looking to reduce their dependence on spectacle or contact lens prescriptions for both long and near distance vision.
Surgical options for the treatment of presbyopia in Melbourne were very limited until the advent of PRESBYOND laser blended vision. With this technique, the well-established safe and effective procedure of traditional LASIK surgery is modified to correct the eye for multiple viewing distances rather than just one.
Presbyopia refers to the normal age-related decline of near focusing ability. It generally begins to become noticeable around the mid-40s and continues to progress with increasing age. In the early stages, a patient with mild presbyopia may notice they have to hold reading material further away than usual in order to bring it into focus; eventually patients complain of their “arms not being long enough” in order to be able to read the text clearly. A near reading prescription tends to increase with age before plateauing around 60 to 65 years of age for most people.
The Process of PRESBYOND Laser Blended Vision
Melbourne residents and those travelling from further communities are welcome to access Armadale Eye Clinic’s expert refractive surgery services (through Eye Laser Specialists) with the attention of our highly trained ophthalmology team in state-of-the-art facilities.
Your initial consultation with our clinicians is predominantly to assess your suitability for laser blended vision. During this appointment, you will undergo a thorough eye examination to ensure your prescription and eye anatomy meet the criteria required for successful laser vision correction. We will also discuss with you the costs and risks associated with the PRESBYOND treatment. Most importantly, a lens trial will be conducted to simulate the vision you can expect from PRESBYOND and to ensure your visual system is comfortable with this.
Unlike traditional monovision arrangement, laser blended vision provides a degree of both far and near vision to both eyes while taking into account your dominant eye. As traditional monovision involves one eye being corrected solely for distance vision and the other eye solely for near, this carries some disadvantages such as difficulty with adaptation, compromised depth perception, and a blur zone at intermediate distances.
Once your suitability for PRESBYOND has been established, the surgical treatment is very similar to the LASIK procedure.
Treatment is performed with local anaesthesia around the eye and you will be asked to fixate on a target light to hold your eye stable. Using a highly precise femtosecond laser, a thin hinged flap of superficial corneal tissue is created and then gently moved away. You will then be repositioned under the excimer laser, which has been calculated and programmed to remove select parts of the underlying corneal tissue to create blended vision in each eye, a process known as photoablation. Once the cornea has been appropriately reshaped, the corneal flap is replaced and allowed to self-seal. You will be given post-operative eye drop medications and care instructions, and several review appointments scheduled to ensure your eye is healing as expected.
Patients having undergone PRESBYOND laser blended vision treatment often experience improvement in their vision within just one or two days after surgery. This new experience of clear vision at distance and near without optical aids generally stabilises within a few weeks but may vary from individual to individual.
Laser blended vision is an effective option for presbyopic patients also with other refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and even astigmatism.
